A caries infection is the term for the bacterial infection which causes cavities. When these acidic bacteria replace the normal, healthy bacteria in your mouth, they can create demineralized holes in your teeth, commonly known as cavities. The risk of a cavity is increased by prolonged exposure to this bacteria, such as eating a sour or sweet candies without rinsing out all the acidic bacteria in your mouth afterward.

Sometimes brushing and flossing are not enough, because they do not change the acidity level in your mouth to get rid of the infection once it starts.
